#BIKEYGEES e.V. is a non-profit organization based in Berlin, Germany. Volunteers of the organization provide bike training to female refugees, free of charge. They believe that cycling is a fundamental component of individual mobility for women refugees. Because many of these women feel isolated in their new accommodation, biking provides them an alternative to walking, so that they may better explore their surroundings more easily and more efficiently. Biking also provides a solution to the financial barrier that public transport sometimes brings.
Therefore, it is important to them, beyond the intercultural aspect, to consider the possibility of cycling as a sustainable approach to ensuring mobility and independence. The initiative aims to strengthen the prospects and hope of those who have lost their comforts of home.
Through its holistic approach, the association #BIKEYGEES e.V. tries to unite different aspects such as empowerment, independence, CO2-neutral mobility, movement in the fresh air, joie de vivre and mutual success. Plus it's just a lot of fun (for all parties involved.)
Why I Like Them:
One of my absolute favorite things to do in the whole wide world, is to ride my bike through the streets of Berlin. I get impatient waiting for the U-bahn (and hate the way the air feels down there.) I love walking but sometimes time isn't on my side and I need to get somewhere quicker. For this reason, I would always choose the bike as my preferred mode of transportation. I love the way that my legs ache when I'm climbing up a hill, or the way my hair is flowing freely when I'm flying down one. To be able to give someone else that simple joy is really what life is all about. I had the pleasure of volunteering with this organization a few weeks ago. You can read all about the experience here.
