Black Girls Run!
Black Girls Run is a community of women that encourages other women (especially African-American women) to make fitness (and healthy living) a priority. On BlackGirlsRun.com, you can gain inspiration for workouts, connect with other running enthusiasts in your city, or sign up for a marathon.
They're not your average running group. Created in order to tackle the growing obesity epidemic in the African-American community, Black Girls Run provides encouragement and resources to both new and veteran runners.
Why We Like Them:
As someone who started running a bit over a year ago, I know firsthand just how empowering running can be. It takes a bit of persistence before you break through and experience your first "runner's high" (it's a real thing, I swear), but when you do, it's the most magical thing ever. Your mind becomes clear and the silly things you were fretting before ( like a fuckboy not texting you back or sending a company newsletter with an embarrassing typo) just melt away.
Empowerment begins from the inside out. When we are strong in body, we are strong in mind, and then our communities get stronger too.
The founders of Black Girls Run! noticed a problem in their communities (80% of African-American women are overweight) and developed an empowering solution. The BGR! movement wants to lower that percentage and subsequently, lower the number of women with chronic diseases associated with an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle.
