Here Are Some Reasons Why Abortion Clinics Are Now Closing in Blue States

If you’ve been keeping up with the women’s health debate, you know the effect that TRAP (Targeted Regulation of Abortion Provider) laws are having on abortion clinics in red states.  Recently, however, abortion clinics in blue states are now closing their doors as well. Since 2011,California (a notoriously blue state) has closed 12 of their abortion clinics.

Here are some reasons why abortion clinics are closing in blue states:

Demand is Down

Because blue states tend to give women easier access to contraceptives, the demand for abortion services is down. When you invest in women’s reproductive health services, abortion becomes obsolete.

Economic Reasons

While clinics try to keep the cost of abortions down, most women that need abortion services, are poorer women who don’t have insurance or are on Medicaid. The clinics end up having to make up the difference when Medicaid doesn’t cover certain cases. It’s important to note that Medicaid only provides $500 when a woman’s life is in danger or when she has been raped. Because of the restrictions, most clinics don’t even bother with accepting Medicaid.
